Artifacts

Soon, I’ll be sending off another carving. There have been so many departures involving so much of my life, I’ve always been somewhat surprised that I haven’t felt more possessive when each one was finished. After all these years, I’m starting to understand these feelings.

Recently, I had a one man exhibit at The American Museum of Fly Fishing. For me, the most interesting part of the experience was being able to compare the minutely detailed brushwork of my distant past to the focus on soft color modulation and less detail of my recent efforts. My experience has been that subtle transitions of color and light have much more to do with portraying the magic of a fish’s appearance than does detail.

Part of my process now includes a fresh look at yesterday’s efforts WITHOUT MY GLASSES so that the lens of morning, a rested brain, and softer (some would say blurry!) vision, illuminate my path forward. Lately, my conclusion is that…
Just because you CAN create detail, doesn’t mean you SHOULD!

So this process of mine brims with hours and ideas, and revisions of ideas, and revisions of revisions, and on and on. The result (artifact) is for sale. The ingredients, I get to keep!
